Scutellaria baicalensis is a perennial herb of the mint family that grows to heights of approximately 1.5 feet.  Once mature the plants produces spikes of purple flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and other insects to pollinate your garden.  Scutellaria baicalensis is commonly called Chinese skullcap or Baikal skullcap.  Chinese skullcap is related to the North American skullcap, Scutellaria lateriflora.  The roots of the Scutellaria baicalensis is one of the fundamental herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine.  Some of the traditional uses for Chinese skullcap include treatment of anxiety and treatment of inflammation.  The roots of the plant have been shown to contain baicalein, baicalin, wogonin, norwogonin, oroxylin A and β-sitosterol.
